O valiant hearts who to your glory came
through dust of conflict and through battle flame
tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved
your memory hallowed in the land you loved...
2.
Tommy went across the sea gallant soldiers to the front Singing out “here are we” to bear battle’s brunt In Picadilly, Leicester Square join up the women say Take the shilling, sign there and say goodbye to Dolly Gray Given a uniform and a gun it’s off to bayonet drill Six inches of cold steel and now we’re taught to kill Listen to the man what does he say? Friends are coloured khaki and your enemies are grey Pals battalion, soldiers now boys go marching by Pack up our kitbags we’re out to do or die Listen to the man what does he say? Friends are coloured khaki and your enemies are grey Pals battalion, soldiers now boys go marching by Pack up our kitbags we’re out to do or die Listen to the man what does he say? Friends are coloured khaki your enemies are grey Starshell bright lights the sky prelude to dawn’s early light The time has come to stand to hold your gun ready to fight Starshell bright lights the sky prelude to dawn’s early light The time has come to stand to hold your gun ready to fight They say it'll be over soon home by Christmas day Lying here in a muddy trench is that really what they say? A moment’s peace at the front football kicked in no mans land But silent night is destroyed by shell no fraternising orders stand

We the Old Contemptible few drinking char then we stand to Digging in behind the bags Trenches stretch across the land In Flanders mud we stand In the pink behind the bags Hunkered down behind the wire bumped by Hun artillery fire In a funk behind the bags From the posts barb wire’s strung no-mans land the bodies hung Just the dead behind the bags Sunset on the western front once more the evening hate A thousand guns now taunt us there’s no escape from our fate Direct hit, no body remains just fragments of bone an’ skin Brass hats will be sending out telegram for the next of kin Does an angel float above us? Can’t see through the shot and shell As the world tears up around us Why would an angel visit Hell? Does an angel float above us? (above us) Can’t see through the shot and shell As the world tears up around us (around us) Why would an angel visit Hell? Hear the hoots early morning Bob-man calls out the warning Floundering in a green sea fumble my mask to save me Someone yelling, going down on dry land begins to drown Spewing cud gasping breath another here is touched by death They said to die for England here is something sweet and right Watching Tommy spew his guts out no, dying’s not a glorious sight Does an angel float above us? (above us) Can’t see through the shot and shell As the world tears up around us (around us) Why would an angel visit Hell? Does an angel float above us? (above us) Can’t see through the shot and shell As the world tears up around us (around us) Why would an angel visit Hell?

War Machine 04:52
We were young Bored Broken Tired and ignored A disease Unspoken In the end All we were What we wanted A place to belong War Machine Keep the wheels on turning War Machine Keep the bodies burning Screams of pain Soaked in red rain Roll over broken bones Stuck in the mud In the piss and the blood Kings of unholy thrones War Machine Keep the wheels on turning War Machine Keep the bodies burning And remember the days And remember the damned And remember the time when we broke it all And remember Create Then take a seat again

Seven thirty the whistle blows Over the top the order goes Grab the ladder take a breath Over the top into the jaws of death… Breathe in Aim Breathe out Shoot to kill Death and screams all around end of dreams, more men go down Devils chariot, metal beast war machine that needs to feast From High Wood to the Danger Tree this is the world that’s left for me… Breathe in Aim Breathe out Shoot to kill Yeah We’re flying We’re soaring forever Yeah We’re wasting We’re falling together Yeah We’re flying We’re soaring forever Yeah We’re wasting We’re falling together Shoot to kill
6.
Torn, broken, bleeding Friends stuck in my hair Can’t tell if I’m still screaming Pieces everywhere Crawling on my knees On my way begging to you Father, hear me please! And then what did you do? What did you do? Why can’t you see? I’ve got holes where eyes should be And what did you do? Yeah, what did you do? If I were God Do you think I would? If I were God Do you think I would? I did not come to bring peace upon the earth I came to bring a fucking sword I came to put up a son against his father But I just needed more and more and more and more If I were God Do you think I would? If I were God Do you think I would? Create Then take a seat again If I were God Do you think I would? If I were God Do you think I would?

Fighting over a brick colour’d stain After the shells all that remains A foreign field, a lake of mud Tinted red with good mens blood In a place called Passchendaele In a town called Passchendaele You feel the dread, you smell the fear Grasping a photo of all you hold dear Over the top, once more we go Shot down or drown, the reaper sows In a place called Passchendaele In a hell called Passchendaele Withdrawn now from the front Those that have born the brunt Revolution, mutiny What pray tell, will come of me Don’t they know, w’had our fill Tell them, I don’t wanna kill Tommy’s now, strapped to a gun Field punishment number one In a place called Passchendaele Through a hell called Passchendaele March along the Menin Road Hellfire corner said and done Puts down a sandbag, marks the hole and blows his foot off with a gun The court martial they don’t care six minutes, and he’s been tried At dawn’s light he hears the prayer the paper square, has been tied Lack of morale fibre example needed to be seen For the honour of the regiment he’s shot dead at just nineteen

Too low for the gutter Too high for the trench You see how we die yet complain about the stench Hey little orphans how do you do? Tear off my medal ‘cause you think it’s a sin That I fight for your freedoms with the colour of my skin What little privilege ruined you? One-ninety-one God is long gone You’d think war was over once the fighting was done Still hear the ringing in my ear White, black, bleeding red I said Race doesn’t matter when you’re already dead so I’ll show you something to fear Tell me what’s real Tell me how to feel Just for the bliss of it The kiss of it comes down Johnson comes Knocking on the door Pray for your life and fall to floor Watch as your friends disappear Yeah White, black, bleeding red I said Race doesn’t matter when you’re already dead so I’ll show you something to fear Tell me what’s real Tell me how to feel Just for the bliss of it The kiss of it comes down

The End 04:57
Four years now Stuck in hell Bombs and gas and shot and shell Death and pain all around me Didn’t you say Trust Obey Live to fight another day Didn’t you sell quite the story? “For King and Country We will never let you down For King and Country You will fight to protect the crown!” Four years now Stood on the line We fought the fight We did our time For King and Country You laughed and watched us drown Poor Scouser Tommy Lying in the mud His life slips away Drowns in his own blood Barbed-wired tourniquet Tears in his flesh He stares at the sky Draws in his last breath Whilst others grow old and their memories fade Forever twenty-one in this soil where he’s laid A polished stone marks where he lays One among millions Here to stay Now I’m stuck on the wire I’m out of time But the sky’s on fire And it looks so divine We become what we hate Too far gone Far too late We repeat the same state We will kill What we create Now I’m stuck on the wire I’m out of time But the sky’s on fire And it looks so divine

about

"an explosive thought provoking masterpiece… 5/5” Flick of the Finger

"Saul has produced a fantastic work in “The Great War”. It has all the edge and grittiness that is needed for this subject matter, but the lyrics themselves might be even more haunting... 9/10..." The Prog Mind

"a collection of well written, arranged and performed songs that stands firmly on its own two muddy, bloody feet..." The Progressive Aspect

2014 was the centenary of the “war to end all wars” and I had the idea to compose some music around the subject. Rather than just release one song or EP in 2014, I decided it would be an interesting concept to release one song a year, from 2014 to 2018 that, combined, would form one (longer) piece of music.

In 2018 Bad Elephant approached me with the idea of releasing the project as a full album and this opportunity has allowed me to re-record and reinterpret the songs I had written since 2014 and also include some additional ones, the end result being The Great War album.
